In an increasingly fast-paced world, individuals and families seem to be searching for deeper, more consistent connections—and often, they’re finding them in their school communities. Where once churches, neighbourhood groups, and activity clubs were the cornerstones of community life, changing social structures and time pressures have made these less central to families’ lives. In contrast, educational institutions are increasingly providing spaces where shared experiences create a sense of empathy and understanding, and where regular connection and engagement occurs – often becoming one of the few places where a whole family can feel seen, supported, and involved.
We are all hardwired for belonging. Psychologists like Maslow placed the need to belong just above basic survival needs in his hierarchy, and ongoing research continues to show that feeling part of a community contributes to overall wellbeing and resilience. For many families, schools are stepping into this role—and are no longer just institutions of learning, but are places where parents find friendships, children develop lasting connections, and a shared sense of purpose unites the entire household.
Unlike single-purpose groups, such as sporting teams that might cater to only one family member, schools can offer an all-encompassing community. They bring together people across generations and interests, and incorporate parents, carers, students, staff, extended family and friends. This broad inclusivity makes educational institutions uniquely positioned to meet the relational and emotional needs of today’s families. It’s becoming quite a common occurrence for parents to find their closest friendships through school connections, or for school communities to rally around a family in crisis with meals, care, and practical support.
As the role of educational institutions continues to evolve beyond the classroom, families are embracing the school community as a trusted and familiar anchor. While a focus on learning and wellbeing remains important, the institutions that are standing out are those that foster genuine relationships, shared values, and a culture of belonging. In a world that often feels divided and disconnected, educational institutions are quietly becoming one of the most vital and unifying community hubs we have.
What can you do to make your families feel more valued and supported, and to create a community where they truly feel like they belong?
