Hello there

A very small percentage of our staff (teachers and ESOs) have been using AI-generated graphics for a range of comms (internal newsletters or announcements, excursions).

Regardless of how ‘good’ the brief to AI is – the outcome is often way off the mark in terms of brand integrity.

Thankfully, most staff send things through to my Team to ‘check’ before distribution – and we gently replace any AI generated content with our own ‘style’ which is to feature our students, use of College colours and templates etc.

The last bastion is the internal staff newsletter – which is not generated by my team. I think this is being done, not in any way to contravene our brand guidelines, but more to have ‘creative control’ over something.

There is also the issue of taste ie: what I think is bad design or ‘off-brand’ is often seen as ‘fun’ and ‘colourful’.

So I pick my battles – most staff know that anything ‘outward facing’ (ie: families, community, general public’) needs to come through my team for checking…

The internal newsletter? I am letting that go… for now.

Not sure that was useful?

The key message is about the power and integrity of our College brand. This is a very ‘corporate’ view (as the business world understands the power of a brand and how consistency is king). I am not sure schools see their ‘logo’ or brand as a powerful marketing tool or valuable asset.

I come from a business background – not a school one – so have been constantly raising this at SLT meetings etc.

The other way we have achieved ‘buy-in’ from staff, has been to offer support for all presentations, flyers, etc – and in the end, teachers are generally happy for us to do the work – but at least we get to put our design lens across everything.

We also have a Graphic Designer in my team – so it helps enormously to have in-house expertise in this area.

Cheers
