Hi Sarah,

We are an R-12 single-campus school of >700 students. Due to some recent internal restructuring, our Advancement Team is currently down by one. Content creation, including video, is to form part of an intended ‘Publications and Digital Media’ role (at 0.85-0.90 FTE), however, it may not be until 2027 that we make an appointment. In the meantime, core duties of that role are being delegated, and whilst I am one of the only staff members to have dabbled in videography in the past, it is not currently within my scope to do so.

In the past, we have:
1) called upon an external production team to shoot a series of long-form content (1-3 videos of >3 minutes each; shot over a couple of days) once every couple of years
2) involved our Student Prefects (albeit 90% of their content has been for internal use only i.e. assemblies and student notices)
3) I have taken footage, as shot by myself or other staff, to edit something together internally (such as our Year 12s’ final day of school). We are moving away from that sort of guerrilla filming, though, until additional school devices can be acquired for this purpose (vs nominated staff with consent to use a personal device).

Despite being such a fast-growing area, video content does seem to often be relegated as a ‘nice to have’ vs ‘necessity’. I am a huge advocate for growing my school’s capabilities in this space. When the new intended role is filled, the challenge will be allocating an appropriate FTE to content creation that is in balance with both the (growing) demand for video and other core responsibilities of the role. So, to that end, this thread is proving very illuminating.

Thanks,
Danielle
