– How have your school adjusted photo permission policies and practices in response to recent changes in privacy laws: In order for school to use student photo/ video/ name in promotion, they must receive opt-in consent from parents and students (over 15) annually.
Our school always collects annual photo permissions. For a small school we had a high rate of Do not Photograph.
– What strategies have schools found effective in encouraging parents and students to opt-in for photo and video permissions? – I looked at our social media and Privacy policies – created a letter to go with the consent form (that was not very user friendly and easier to tick No) that explained the policy and how importance photos are and how we use photos to give parents greater comfort in us using photos.
– Are there particular communication methods or campaigns that have yielded higher opt-in rates? – A direct communication from the Principal. Parents did change their minds, when they had greater awareness and understanding of how and why we use photos. We do not publish names. Also students don’t like to be left out and we could include them in group photos.
