I feel your frustration, Bec! We have gone down this same path of trying to please each cohort, but in the end it was more trouble than it was worth. While we would love to cater to everyone, we decided on a streamlined ‘cookie cutter’ approach, due to resources and our other alumni priorities. While reunions are great for re-connection, we found our cohorts really didn’t want to hear from the School and just wanted an opportunity to catch up with each other. So, we offer a School tour from 4.30pm – 5.30pm (we only get a handful to this), then canapes at a local pub within walking distance. They have a private room upstairs and they pay for their own drinks. We charge $50 per head. We found that our alumni really didn’t want to pay any more than that, so it just covers our costs. I attend along with our Director of Development to help with name tags at the start, then our Principal says a few words (keeping it mainly nostalgic and not too much about the School) and we head off after about an hour and leave them to it. I usually have a rolling powerpoint of old photos on the screen. This seems to work for us! We haven’t had many complaints about the format or venue, so it seems to be working.
