We did this for our 125 year anniversary and turned it into a real world project. Our Maths department made it a project for their Year 6 class. Here is what the students wrote about it.

The 125 year mark is a significant time for Santa Sabina College, and represents the heritage of our school. In the past few weeks a group of year six students took on the challenge of trying to fit the entire school population inside the outlines of the number 125 on Harmony Day.
In a short space of time we have discovered many new techniques and problem solving strategies to help us work collaboratively, and over time have discovered how much maths is needed in real life circumstances.
We needed to know…
How we could fit 1400 people inside the numerals 1, 2 and 5.
How to find the circumference and area of a circle and semi circle.
What shapes we could use to make the 1, 2 and 5.
The area of the oval the project will take place.
How many people will be included in the final 1, 2 and 5.
What the design of the 1, 2 and 5 will be.
The ratio of the numbers, which later on we decided would be 3 to 5.
The crowd density to make sure the amount of people per metre squared is safe.
How we would convert our designs on grid paper into a real life scale.

Skills we learnt:
We discovered Pi, our teachers gave us strategies and taught us how to effectively use Pi in this project
We learnt about ratio and proportion and learnt how to calculate the areas of new shapes such as parallelograms, circles, semi-circles and annuli!!
We were taught how to calculate the area of various quadrilaterals and how we will use different basic shapes in our project.
Some of us learnt how to use a protractor and compass

Our Property team mapped it out and we used a drone to capture it.
Good luck
