Note from an International Advancement Manager’s Desk Hi, everyone! My name is ‘Sarah’ and I am the International Advancement Manager for The Macquarie School, a 1,200 student co-educational independent school located on the mid- north coast of New South Wales. In five years we’ve grown our international student profile to 10% of our student population. These students enrol in the Upper School and reside in a local homestay program. Even though the vast majority of our overseas students hail from Hong Kong and mainland China, it’s an ongoing goal of our Head of School and the Board of Governors that we diversify our international student body. Sound familiar?? I’m serving as The Macquarie’s School’s first International Advancement Manager (IAM). I started in February 2018 and report to the Vice President of Advancement and External Relations. A large part of my portfolio is to establish relationships with international alumni, families and students in advance of the school ‘going global’ with our first comprehensive global campaign (our last campaign ended in 2015 and we raised $25 million; this time it’s $50 million). I will be traveling abroad a few times a year to begin identifying alumni and families who will be integral to the campaign. I took my first trip last month and, boy, did I learn a lot! In fact, I started writing down what I’ve learned as a road map that may help your institution too. We’re working towards a pre-campaign launch event in Asia in mid-January 2019. Our goals: alumni, family and friend engagement and qualification visits with prospective donors - cultivation in our silent phase. In fact, I started writing down what I’ve learned as a road map that may help your institution too. Staff IAM co-hosts meeting with Vice President of Advancement and External Relations to discuss overall campaign timeline, objectives of next trip’s meetings and events, the dates of the trip, and goals for global engagement with Asian community.
