Who owns the data?
I’m wondering if anyone has had the issue of data ownership come up when a student becomes an Old Girl. We use the same database for students and Old Girls, so the girls just change from a student to an Old Girl in the same system at the end of their schooling. Some students pay to become ‘members’ of the Old Girls Association but others don’t. When a person becomes a paid member of the association do the details we have in the school database become the property of the Old Girls Association or stay with the school? The database is owned by the school.
I’m assuming if the Association had it’s own database and put their paid members in there it would belong to them.
Any thoughts?
Hi Donna. This is one of the reasons we advocate for Alumni Assns to be a sub committee of the school. There should be one data base that speaks to all areas… along with associated access controls. As to use of the database, as long as your intentions are honourable, you should not have any problems. Wishing you well. Neil. CEO Educate Plus
Thank you Neil. That makes so much sense. I’ll look into the sub-committee idea.
