Topic : Impactful strategic planning for your fundraising and specific campaign goals
In such challenging times as we are experiencing at the moment, it is important to make sure you have a plan to follow as circumstances begin to return to some degree of normality. Alan Watkinson and Penny Bowman will take you through the stages of developing your own strategic plan if you do not have one already; and they will also examine how to review your current plan and adapt it to changing situations.

Dr. Alan Watkinson has worked in education for his entire career and was Head of the English Faculty at Scotch College in Melbourne for 17 years.
Alan has been Director of Development and Advancement at Scotch College, Trinity College at the University of Melbourne and at the Melbourne Business School. In 2013, he was appointed as Director of Alumni and Advancement at La Trobe University where he built the team from 11 people to a total of 25. He became Chief Advancement Officer in June 2016 and in this role he worked closely with the Vice Chancellor in leading the Campaign for La Trobe – Make the Difference. The target for the University’s first-ever comprehensive campaign was $50 million over five years, a target which was exceeded within three years.
Alan is a former Chairman of Educate Plus and has presented widely on advancement issues throughout Australia and internationally for more than a decade. He has been a regular presenter at CASE conferences and has taught at the CASE Institute for educational fundraisers in Australia.
He has a particular interest in campaigns and major gifts, but also had deep involvement in the annual giving programs of his institutions, bequest programs and stewardship, as well as integrating alumni relations into a comprehensive advancement office.
Alan is a Fellow of Educate Plus, and in 2010 was the recipient of both the Trevor Wigney Award and the Peter Crook Award for services to educational advancement in Australasia.
Alumni Relations and Development Manager
Penny is an experienced Development Manager, specialising in the initial establishment and implementation of Alumni Relations and Development strategies. Penny joined Toorak College in 2016 as the school’s first ever appointed person in a Development role. Through consultation with the school’s key stakeholders and the development of best practice policies, Penny has successfully embedded a strategic plan to support the school’s philanthropic and community relations endeavours. Key outcomes to date include the successful completion of a capital campaign, establishment of a bequest society, initiation of a stewardship program and the implementation of many new alumni relation initiatives. Previously, Penny was Alumni Relations Manager at Haileybury College.
