Our Bundaberg event is for advancement team members working in leadership; principals, directors and managers. Support staff will also benefit from the day, including those working specifically in:

Regional Membership Opportunities and Qld Chapter Conference bursary information.

About the Presenters 

Lara Pickering

Lara Pickering is the Director of Philanthropy and Stakeholder Engagement at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Brisbane.  She is passionate about the support of education, and has spent the past nine years in the tertiary education sector with The University of Queensland in a variety of external engagement focused roles. Prior to joining St Margaret’s, Lara was the Associate Director, Alumni & Community Engagement, and Deputy Director, Philanthropy and Engagement within UQ’s Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology.

Lara’s experience includes developing strategy for, implementing and promoting programs and initiatives that engage the organisation’s alumni and broader community in mutually beneficial partnership. She is responsible for maximising philanthropic income for scholarships and bursaries, capital projects, bequests and the Endowment Fund through managing relationships with stakeholders including donors, corporate supporters and sponsors, alumni, staff, past and current parents. Lara is currently leading a $1m Capital Campaign for a new sports precinct at St Margaret’s.

Lara is a Member of Educate Plus since 2018 and sits on the Queensland Chapter Committee. 


John Collins F.EdPlus

With a career in business, marketing, and community engagement spanning over 30 years, John has successfully developed and delivered several creative marketing and capital campaigns for many educational institutions across Queensland.  For 10 years, John was the Director of Marketing and Community Relations at Nambour Christian College where he implemented a range of projects that improved enrolment and engagement figures significantly to bring the college to where it is today.

John is currently the Managing Director of his own consultancy company, Business Revelations, where he provides strategic advice to support educational institutions to manage their community engagement, administration functions, IT infrastructure, and capital fundraising programs.

He is also a member of the College Board at Nambour Christin College and is the immediate Former Board Chair of Educate Plus, Australia and NZ.


Helen Turner M.EdPlus

Helen has worked for St Laurence’s College since 2011 in a number of roles. With over 10 years’ experience in event management, Helen joined St Laurence’s College as Event Manager before transitioning into the Alumni and Fundraising area.

Helen currently manages the College Development office but predominantly focuses on fundraising and alumni relations. Departmental tasks include running the reunion program and alumni activities in addition to facilitating all Old Boy communications and database management.  Each year the school runs decade reunions – up to 70 years as well as numerous formal and informal events.

Helen has been a member of Educate Plus since 2016 and the Queensland Chapter Committee since 2017.


Lea Walker-Franks F.EdPlus

Over the past 25 years Lea has worked across co-educational and single-sex schools, Christian and secular schools.  She was teaching for 15 years and has been in marketing, development and alumni roles for the last 11 years. Lea genuinely enjoys designing and implementing community engagement models and has established three Advancement Offices.

In the development role, she has helped secure over $20m in cash, pledges and bequests towards four significant new buildings, several major renovations and has established multiple bursaries. Lea successfully led the ‘$10m+ Discover what’s Possible’ Campaign (Newington College, Sydney) and established ‘The Founders Society’ bequest group nurturing the membership to over 100 within five years. The ‘$1m+ Building a Tree of Learning’ Campaign (Brisbane Girls Grammar School) saw the target achieved within 2 years almost double. Currently, Lea is leading the Gregory Terrace Foundation’s ‘$10m+ Join the Journey’ Campaign (Brisbane).

Lea has been a member of Educate Plus since 2008 and is currently the QLD Chapter Committee President, serves on the Educate Plus Organisational Board and recognised as a Fellow in 2018.
