The Discover Advancement and Community Development workshop is designed for those delegates who are new to the sector; those who juggle multiple roles and/or those who represent institutions in the early stages of their Advancement and Community Development journeys.
There’ll be a lot of shared knowledge in the room that will provide you with practical and relatable pointers and insights to get you started so that you can achieve some immediate success. Opportunities to network and share experiences with fellow workshop delegates in similar roles offer exceptional additional benefit.
Meet the presenters:
Fundraising: Chris Klaassen F.Edplus, Major Gift Specialist, Speaker, Advancement Executive Coach
Chris has worked as an Advancement Consultant since 1995. Prior to fundraising, Chris was a Housemaster and teacher at King’s College and Macleans College. He has much experience with the management structures of schools and the “micro-politics” of educational organisations, having worked with 31 schools, 14 regional organisations and two Universities in New Zealand. Chris is former President of Educate Plus (NZ Chapter), is the current Chair of SIEBA Board (Schools International Education Business Association peak body of 305 schools), is a trustee for Sacred Heart College Development Foundation and previously a Trustee of Manaiakelani Education Trust. Current roles include being Director of Black Gold (Advancement for 42 National Sports Organisations and the NZ Olympic Committee), plus being Director of International Students at Avondale College.

Tony established the Macquarie Marketing Group in 1996 and MMG Education in 2005. Today, MMG Education is recognised as the leading service provider to schools in stakeholder satisfaction, engagement, benchmarking and ‘best practice enrolment processes. Tony understands the challenges that face school Governors and Principals, having served on the Council of a leading independent school in NSW for 9 years. During this time he initiated stakeholder engagement processes, the school’s marketing and strategic plan, boarding strategies and refinement of the school’s scholarship program. Tony has over 30 year’s senior executive level experience in the corporate sector in marketing and general management working in leading global corporations. MMG Education now includes over 150 schools as clients across Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
Alumni: Vicki Fowler F.Edplus, Communities Development Consultant, Chain of Events Ltd
Vicki joined the advancement sector in 2007 and, over the following decade, directed the establishment of a Community Development operation at one of New Zealand’s leading state secondary schools. Her extensive business sector experience in community building and engagement, stakeholder partnership management, business strategy, brand marketing and event management provided an essential toolkit during the various stages of the Community Development operation’s growth.
Vicki’s first-hand experience in advancement governance, management and operational roles provides her with an in-depth understanding of the myriad of challenges and opportunities encountered by those delegates who run part-time or one-person offices; those who represent schools in the early stages of their community development journeys; and/or those responsible for restructuring small teams to accommodate necessary shifts in operational focus.
Vicki was awarded an Educate Plus Fellowship in 2016 for her services to the sector as a representative and supporter of New Zealand state school alumni and development professionals.
Marketing & Communications: Mandy McFarland F.Edplus Director of Advancement, St Catherine’s College, UWA & Educate Plus Chair
Mandy has over 26 years’ experience in business development, philanthropy, client relationship management and marketing and has worked across both schools and universities in Australia and South Africa. She is currently establishing a stakeholder engagement program at St Catherine’s College which includes alumni, marketing and corporate relationships. Mandy has also launched a $20 million capital campaign which is well underway to expand the College’s Indigenous program with a new 54 bed facility and a holistic support program. Building a vibrant, inclusive community and empowering young people from across the world to be empathetic and more accepting of cultural differences is a core ethos at the College and integral to their marketing proposition.
